In November 2004 I took these shots of a local countryman selling Greater Rhea eggs on the side of the road near Ceibas, in the province of Entre Ríos. This was happening barely 300 meters from the police post under the bridge from where the road breaks off to Gualeguay. Cultural issues, and a few meagre bucks, prevent this character (and perhaps law enforcement as well) from realizing that this activity is contributing to the diminishing range of the Greater Rhea. The eggs are most likely purchased here as a curiosity for the home. Note also the tiny Monk Parakeet chick in his left hand (pet trade)!
